Today's systems analysts do far more than gather requirements and design databases. They build intelligent systems that integrate artificial intelligence while addressing security, ethics, and governance throughout the systems development process.

Systems Analysis and Design: Building Intelligent and Ethical Systems guides students through the full Systems Development Life Cycle, from project identification through implementation, deployment, and maintenance. Rather than treating AI governance, cybersecurity, and data architecture as separate topics, the text incorporates them throughout each phase, preparing students to design systems that are technically sound, secure, and ethically responsible. The book is grounded in contemporary frameworks, including the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, ISO/IEC 42001, the OECD AI Principles, and the EU AI Act. Built around a single, evolving exam registration system, each chapter connects theory to hands-on practice while providing instructional guidance designed for synchronous, asynchronous, and blended learning environments.

Written by Dr. Karen Coombs, an educator, researcher, and technology leader with more than 20 years of experience in software quality assurance, systems engineering, and AI governance, this text bridges academic rigor with real-world application, preparing future professionals to build the next generation of intelligent systems with confidence and integrity.

Karen Coombs

Dr. Karen Coombs is a Ph.D. holder in Information Technology, an accomplished educator, and a technology leader with over 20 years of experience spanning software quality assurance, systems engineering, and AI governance. As Founder of Coombs Consulting LLC, she helps organizations build AI governance and continuous-verification practices, the ongoing discipline of proving that a system's controls still work, not just that they exist on paper. Alongside her consulting practice, Dr. Coombs serves as adjunct faculty at four universities, preparing the next generation of technology professionals to build secure, accountable systems. She's based in Las Vegas, with family roots that bring her back to Jamaica often.
