Inside the Machine offers something rare in the crowded field of AI education: a rigorous, hands-on introduction to machine learning and deep learning that requires no mathematics background and no coding experience. Designed for curious learners from any discipline, this twelve-lesson guide walks readers through the foundational concepts that power modern artificial intelligence — from classification and clustering to neural networks and large language models — through physical, collaborative, “unplugged” activities that make abstract algorithms tangible and accessible.

Each lesson establishes context, then guides the learner through doing with explanatory narrative. Readers classify images by hand, simulate reinforcement learning in real time, and work through the steps of K-means clustering without touching a line of code. These activities are grounded in current research on embodied learning and universal design, making the book equally effective in the classroom and in professional development settings.

Inside the Machine also takes seriously the social and ethical dimensions of AI: who builds these systems, who benefits, and who bears the cost. Pairing technical understanding with critical inquiry, this book prepares students and lifelong learners — whether they use generative or agentic AI or simply encounter it in daily life — to think clearly and purposefully about it.

Mary Beth Rudis

Mary Beth is a mathematics and data science educator with over 30 years of experience across a wide range of settings. She completed graduate studies in mathematics at Lehigh University before dedicating herself to teaching. In her early career she taught both math and computer science at a private high school in the Lehigh Valley, PA. Mid-career she held the math department chair position at Great Bay Community College in Portsmouth, NH, where she created one of the nation’s first certificate programs in data science for undergraduate studies. Now she is a member of the teaching faculty at the University of New England in Biddeford, ME.

Everyone is “a math person.” In the classroom and out, Mary Beth has helped students overcome math anxiety. She has been a fierce advocate for removing barriers for students who wish to pursue studies in either mathematics or computer science; Mary Beth has developed curriculum for middle school, high school, and college audiences so that any teacher can implement more learner-centered and growth-focused teaching and assessment models. She has her own YouTube channel (@EZMathTV) and maintains a website for statistics and AI literacy (https://ezmathtv dot com or https://ezmath dot tv).
