After a 40-year career coaching college football, I look back with deep gratitude for every moment the game gave me -the wins and losses, the challenges and triumphs -but most of all, the players who touched my life. This book is a reflection on those years and the lessons I learned while coaching, developing young athletes and developing a program. At its core, this book is about understanding that effective coaching begins from the inside out. Before we can all start coaching our athletes, we must first understand who we are, what we value, and why our role matters so deeply in the lives of young people.

This book explores the foundation of successful coaching…the coach-athlete relationship. It drives culture, development, and in essence it is the building blocks for a successful program. A successful program does not happen by chance. It takes intentional and deliberate leadership on our part as coaches to make it successful. I will present some core principles to help guide and steer the culture of your program. These cornerstones will serve as a compass for leadership, and help create an environment where your athletes can thrive.
