This lab manual was designed to support instructors teaching an upper-level Sensation and Perception course for undergraduate students. The activities described in this manual can be used in a laboratory class and/or as hands-on classroom exercises to provide students with meaningful experiential learning opportunities that reinforce course concepts.

Each activity described in this manual was developed, implemented, and refined throughout years of use in “Sensation and Perception Laboratory” (PSYC 406 Lab) taught at Christopher Newport University. Each exercise has been revised for clarity, smooth implementation, and student engagement based on classroom experience and student feedback. Students consistently report that these hands-on activities help them better understand course material and provide them with enjoyable and appropriately challenging learning experiences.

Research on learning consistently demonstrates that students learn most effectively through active engagement. By encouraging students to observe, experiment, collect data, and reflect on their experiences, these laboratory activities transform abstract concepts into tangible experiences, making them a valuable complement to the course textbook.

Each lab includes background information aligned with course content, a list of required materials, step-by-step procedures, data sheets, and post-lab questions. Instructors may also choose to replace the question section with a formal Lab Report assignment. Guidelines for writing a standard Lab Report are provided in the Appendix.

Olga Lipatova

Olga Lipatova and Matthew Campolattaro are tenured professors in the Department of Psychology and the Neuroscience Program at Christopher Newport University (CNU). Dr. Lipatova’s research focuses on behavioral neuroendocrinology, investigating how hormones influence animal behavior and nervous system function. She teaches courses including Brain and Cognition, Research Methods, and Sensation and Perception. Dr. Campolattaro's research explores the neuroscience of associative learning in animals, and he teaches Psychology of Learning, Research Methods, and Biopsychology. Both professors maintain active research programs that engage undergraduate students in research. They believe students learn best when given opportunities to actively engage with material through hands-on laboratory experiments. The activities in this manual have been successfully implemented in their courses and have received positive student feedback. Beyond academia, Olga and Matthew are partners in life and parents to two elementary-school-aged daughters who continually remind them that some of the most memorable lessons come from hands-on experience.
