A History of Western Music through Inquiry is an engaging story of the origins and developments of Western music and myriad influences that shaped it. It provides a basic understanding of Western art music, or “classical” music as some refer to it, by highlighting the medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical and Romantic historical musical periods. The book also traces the rise of modernism, postmodernism and later approaches to Western music, such as ecomusicology, and focuses on the contributions of women composers throughout this history. Suitable as a textbook for use in an introductory college-level Western music history course, A History of Western Music through Inquiry includes activities designed to engage students from their own personal experiences of music and to draw them into considering historical content that may be unfamiliar. The book also would interest anyone seeking a greater understanding of the fascinating history of Western music.
